DC's one & only all-vegan bakery cafe. Serving up sweets, savories, milkshakes & more!
My name is Doran Peterson and I'm the owner of Sticky Finger Sweet Smeets here in Washington, DC. And we are DC's first all vegan bakery cafe. So everything that we do, we don't use any eggs or dairy, we don't use any animal products at all. We opened our first shop in 2002 of October. There wasn't much in the way of exclusively vegan items or options in the city at the time. And were getting a lot of requests for savory, a lot of requests for people wanting to come down and sit down and make an event out of coming to our shop. So we decided to take advantage of Col And it was expanding at the time and really developing. So were able to find a nice sunny location. I grew up in upstate New York. I had absolutely no connection to the animals that I was eating. It wasn't an emotional thing for me. I didn't mind eating them once they were dead. And it wasn't until I was older where I made that connection where I was working for animal shelters and working for vet tech where I was And then it all kind of fell into place there. We support the kindness collective and compassion over killing and Poplar Farm Animal Sanctuary and Washington H So we really do our part for the community here. I went vegan. I was sad at first. I was not excited about it. I was not happy about it. I mean, I was, So I had to make sure that I was going. I figured other people wanted to eat that way too and they did and they still do. And it's about making it available and showing people that it can be done. You can go out and have really great, delicious and fun food that you enjoy that happens to be vegan. And so that's our take on it and it's to show people that it's a real possible way to live. The savory side has been the one that kind of changes the most and where we experiment the most. When, But with the savory side, it's a little bit more experimentation, a little bit more Our cupcakes are still our best sellers, so cupcakes aren't going anywhere. And we've definitely put ourselves on the map and that's exciting and we're happy and proud to be a part of it and now it's keeping ourselves there. When were the only one,
