Café Avalaun’s mission is to be the leader in Gluten Free all natural, artistically prepared food, drink and bakery, hosted in a green environment. We focus on simple preparation from fresh, locally sourced ingredients and our menu includes delicious house made gluten free bakery items, crepes, fresh salads, daily soups, paninis and coffee service. The vision of Café Avalaun is brought to life through the story of husband-and-wife team Brian and Jennifer Doyle. The café is named after my late mother, Avalaun Harrill Doyle, who passed away when I was just 7. An eclectic artist, she worked across many mediums including poetry, fine arts, singing and songwriting. Jennifer and I met as young teens and I quickly grew close to her family – especially to her mother, Suzan Smith. Also a talented artist, Suzan had her hand in ceramics, drawing, sewing and writing. Passionate about cooking gourmet meals for her family, Suzan’s love of food fueled my passion for cooking and together we shared many culinary adventures. Sadly, Jennifer’s mother Suzan passed away at the age of 49 when our son Logan was 2. It had always been a dream of ours to partner with Suzan and open a café focused on fresh baked breads and homemade soups - her specialties. We believe our mothers instilled in us both a love for creativity and a passion for food that has brought us to open Café Avalaun. The spirits of our mothers through art are invoked with tributes to them throughout. Expressing their personality, hearts and minds, we believe in sustainable considerations throughout all facets of the business utilizing upcycled and reclaimed materials. The café features artwork created by Jennifer’s cousin, Carole Werder. Carole's style is rooted in biographical portrature, with the use of popsicle sticks and other recycled wood objects. Our menu at Café Avalaun is 100% gluten free. This focus on gluten free foods is born out of our own family’s need to be gluten free. Diagnosed with autism at age 2, our oldest son Logan has been gluten free for 18 years. The rest of the family became gluten free in 2011 when Jennifer developed a medical induced debilitating condition leaving her unable to walk or work for 3 months. Doctors could not offer any solutions. They quickly realized that diet held the key to her recovery and so began a journey to wellness for us both through an anti-inflammatory diet. After receiving a diagnosis of gluten intolerance, we they both lost weight and experienced numerous gains in health. As a chef, I realized I could no longer work with gluten professionally, bringing about dramatic changes to my lifestyle and professional life as a chef. Café Avalaun offers off site catering and a prepared meal delivery service called Fresh Meals to the Cleveland area. Sincerely, Brian and Jennifer Doyle

I've always wanted to be a chef since age seven. Hi I'm Brian Doyle, owner of So Food and Cafe Avalon located in Warrensville Heights, Ohio, where our menu is focused on crepes and using local ingredients that just happens to all be gluten free. Working with UCDi was great. We got funded in August of 2015 and without that funding we probably wouldn't have been able to open and employ ten people that we are now employed, which is actually more than we had projected. And business has been so good that we've actually had to hire even more staff. Without the UCDi and the county's help, I wouldn't have been able to realize this dream. Making all this great food, supporting the local food shed, employing ten people, I'm extremely excited about the possibilities of the future.
