Superior Merchandise Company is a design shop and specialty coffee bar located in downtown Troy, New York. We’re focused on offering our customers the very best in quality across the full spectrum of what we do. We’re proud to feature exceptionally well designed goods from a variety of artists and makers, as well as specialty coffee from the best roasters across the country. We believe that curation is the cure for common retail and we strive to present our customers with a thoughtful selection of merchandise that will improve their quality of life, or at least make each day a little better. SMCo also acts as a community gathering space, offering live music, work shops, tastings and other fun events.
In this episode of Small Biz 518, we are at Superior Merchandise talking all about their coffee and design shop. So what happened was when we conceived the whole idea, my girlfriend Felicity and partner in business had always wanted to open a design shop. I started getting at that time into coffee kind of really heavily and traveling around trying different roasters and different brew bars around the country. We started visiting Troy a few years ago. We've both been in the capital region for almost a decade each now. And you could tell there was this great creative energy and this And I thought it would be really cool to do something similar here in Troy to what I've been experiencing in other bigger cities. We wanted to be kind of a community hub and a community center. And so the way Felicity brings in different makers and designers into the design shop, were going to do the same with coffee roasters. So we brought on roasters from all around the country that we're doing kind of creative things. So it's called the multi-roaster concept for the coffee bar. And it's just where we feature a different roaster from the country or even elsewhere in the world. And I switch it up frequently so that you get a chance to try all these different kinds of coffee. And we do the same with the design goods. There's We carry a lot of her stuff. But we also carry Studio Arho, which is a ceramicist in Copenhagen, Denmark. So we just kind of Our biggest project right now is roasting coffee. And we're just starting now, renting space at an area coffee roaster. And we're importing green coffee, roasting it ourselves and serve it alongside all the other great coffees that we bring in from any roaster across the country. That's it for this episode.
