21 opened its doors nearly 15 years ago, starting a new wave of independently owned coffee shops in Toledo. The new owners say that charm is why they frequented the Rugby Drive location for years. And for 2024, they're looking to share that experience with the Toledo community. The reception from the neighborhood and from the community has been great. A lot of friends and community members have reached out and said they're glad to know that this place will continue. I think it's coffee shops are just super important to communities because they really have the pulse of a neighborhood and a pulse of a city and we wanted to make sure that our neighborhood and city was continued to be represented. Plate 21 was originally founded by former Toledo City Councilperson Sandy Spang. She opened another coffee shop in downtown Toledo, Plate 1, which closed temporarily back in November.
