The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

I became a master of surf by luck. Come in here and ask for a job and they hire me as a management. Patch holes, fix the pallets, clean, sweet. There was a window there and there was two rosters. I looked at them and I said, wow, look at that. One day I'm going to be doing that. Most people in Southern California don't realize that we're local. The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf started in Los Angeles, founded by Herb Hyman in 1963. He would keep an actual three by five card behind the register to match an origin coffee and the characteristics of each origin with the customers. He developed a method of sampling the coffee to his customers. That's what we see in the more boutique shops today as a pour over. Coffee Bean started as a job and now it's a compassion for it. It's the art of roasting coffee. You have to be an open mind. People, they'll tell me, coffee is coffee, right? But not my coffee. My coffee is coffee. Because Herb wanted to retain the individuality of each bean, even today we roast each coffee individually. Every coffee tree is a unique organism, a living thing. When you're drinking a cup of coffee, those beans are different from any other beans that existed. When they're drinking, I see their face, I love the feeling. I can see the truth for the people's eyes. That motivates me to wake up at the time I wake up every morning. Seeing the coffee come out of the roaster into the cooler and stir around and then imagine all of the people whose homes that particular batch might wind up in. We have made sure everybody, Yes, because we need to live the legacy, right? The legacy of to have the best coffee in the world.
