Social policy exists to change the world for the better. It draws on ideas from across the social sciences to help us understand and respond to social problems across the world. Social policy is all around us but we tend to take it for granted. You can't study it at school or college so you might not even know what it really is. But the wine in a house we often don't see it or give it much thought but we use it every day and we soon feel the impact when it goes wrong or isn'there for us when we need it. Social policy is about the many ways governments, families, organisations, companies, charities and communities affect the distribution of resources and opportunities to people from different backgrounds about what they do or should do to shape our individual and collective well-being. It's about how their actions foster inequalities or contribute to the reduction of social harms, about what they could and should be doing differently to help make societies fairer and more just. Unfortunately, this social infrastructure isn't in good shape in many countries. The wiring is frayed. For too many people it doesn't work when they need it to and social harm is widespread. Social policy invites us to look at the world and ask is this really right? But it also demands we identify practical ways to address the injustices we see in the world to bring changes that are needed to improve our lives. So what is social policy?
