Ocean Diner

I'm Stephen Appaltown with Brad Jacobson behind the camera and today we're going back in time to the Ocean Diner and Aviation Boulevard in Hermosa Beach. It's a throwback for these decor great diner food. Let's check it out. All right here we are inside the world famous Ocean Diner and Aviation Boulevard in Hermosa Beach. What do we got in front of us here? Well a little variety here a little bit from all bases of the menu. We've got a tortilla scramble, eggs, green onions, tomatoes, jack cheese, mozzarella cheese, topped with guacamole and our home-fried potato. Now this thing that is incredible. It's called an apple creme brulee waffle because I love creme brulee and so we got a waffle here made with all butter topped with a sauteed apples, brown sugar then we torch it, whipped cream and you get bacon and eggs with that and you're set for the day. So what do we have here? It's our own all-white albacore tuna salad that we make every morning and this one has jack cheese and Parmesan cheese. We griddle it on sourdough. Now this is streusel we've been making here at the diner for 31 years since I opened and it's my mom's recipe. She used to make it for us on Sundays so it has brown sugar raisins, walnuts in a butter base with a lot of streusel on top and we sell the heck out of it every weekend. Tell me a little bit more about the place that you've been here for 31 years. You're the sole owner of it. You opened it up. Well 31 years ago I knew I wanted to open a restaurant and this little tiny greasy spoon called grandma's place was for sale and it was just half the size, a counter, eight tables and a little tiny kitchen so it was So I baked every morning and I washed dishes a couple days a week because it was so slow and it slowly got busier and 15 years ago we bought the building and doubled the size and it's been crazy ever since. I've got a couple named Larry and Laurie. They come in every day for the last 31 years. They sit exactly at these two stools order exactly the same thing 363 days because we're closed two days out of the year so you're one of the last independent diners around The 40s were always my big era that I was always interested in because my parents were brought up in the 40s and I That's what I knew I wanted to do was an authentic 40s diner so when I opened I didn't have much money for decorating or anything so I just bought sheet music and some old magazines that I cut out and framed and so there you have it ocean diner avation boulevard in Hermosa Beach. It's been here for 31 years we hope you're here for many more than that and they will because everybody loves it come on down give it a try.
