St. Mark's Coffeehouse

St. Mark is the patron saint of Venice, the first city in Europe to import coffee.

My name is Louisa. I'm essentially the manager for St. Mark's Coffee Shop and Thin Man Tavern. So St. Mark's, we started downtown 14th of Market in 1993. We moved to this location, Capitol Hill 95, I believe. So we're over 30 years on the coffee shop. Then the bar opened up next door 2001. There is such a sense of community here. This place is unique because there are people who show up here who maybe have never felt And if you're here long enough, you would see them blossom and they find a group of people that they love to be with. And you can't necessarily call it a third space because it's a business at the end of the day. But it's about as close to a third space as you can get. A lot of people come here and it's their backyard. Kind of what this place encompasses on a grander scale is that people are just the individuals. I've lived a lot of other places, but this is the one place where you can walk down the street and smile at someone and say hello and you'll get a smile back. And you don't realize that it could change your whole day, but it can. I think that Denver Proper, Capitol Hill, it attracts people who are happy to be here and happy to look out for each other. One of the key components, I think, of the reason that this place has been able to run for as long as it has through COVID and the Finn Man, the bar, was open 365 days last year. So if you don't have somewhere to go on Christmas or Thanksgiving, And the coffee shop was only closed on Christmas. Opened 6. 30 to 10 o'clock in there. The bar is open 3 to 3 p. m. to 2 a. m. There's a very few hours of the day where there's not somebody here. We always throw parties in the bar. So for Halloween, we'll have a, and it happens on Friday this year, it's exciting for us. We'll have a party. New Year's is always a themed party, right? Always something crazy. We hand make all of our decorations. The staff does and it's cool just to come and see it's as much of an art showing as it is a party. The coffee shop and the bar share a downstairs space. It's called the Ubi Sububi. Sort of a play on words loosely in Latin that translates to wear underwear. Very loosely. But we have a rolling events monthly down there every second and fourth Thursdays. There's comedy night every third Thursday. There's a poetry night. Second Mondays, we do open mic night. And then we've just started doing Friday night movie nights to come get free popcorn, watch a free movie. I heard that you have or will already be going to the crypt. That's always my next place I recommend because I think it has a similar vibe, especially if you come to the thin man. There's a lot of iconography on the wall. So I call them are equal and opposite sister, right? You do the light and then you do the dark. I love the it's on 18th and Franklin, I believe. Okay, Kenji Sushi on 18th. Super close to here. They do amazing food and the staff is lovely. Some of the nicest people I think I've met ever. Yeah, it's a funky little atmosphere, but if you're looking for a cheap and easy and welcoming sushi place, that is where I go. Their staff is incredible. Their food is good. And they're always willing to make sure you have a great time there. Bye.
