Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge is Anchorage Alaska's only chocolate lounge- a chocolate and espresso experience amidst contemporary works of art and gifts. We're proud to use American made chocolate and local ingredients with an organic and natural emphasis in our artisan creations.
I'm here in Anchorage, Alaska at Modern Weller's Chocolate Lounge, which I hear from the locals that this is a really special place. So we're going to go inside and meet the ladies who run it. I'm here in Modern Weller's Chocolate Lounge with co-owner Martha Brigham. Hi Martha. Hi, how are you doing? Great, and we're here in Anchorage, Alaska at this specialty chocolate bar. What was the inspiration for creating such a business? Okay, I can see that there's beautiful art all around the walls here and the whole place has a feeling of, Right, environment is very important to us. The whole experience of chocolate and art and pretty things to look at. So Martha, one of the specialties you have here is drinking chocolate, which our American audience may not be as familiar with the way that you do it. Right, we do it in the traditional way, which is a thick consistency with a spice. And I see we use a three chili pepper spice combination and we make espresso drinks with it also, but traditionally we serve it as a thick traditional drink. And this is the way that they would have been in pre-Col A little sweeter. We had cream, water would have been added then. Okay, let's do a little pour and see what it looks We serve it in a three ounce cup. Just look at that. Look how wonderfully thick that is. Now, I know in Spain they would serve this with churros as well to dip in there, but we're just going to get a taste of it because you say it has the three spices, the chipotle, the ancho and cayenne. Okay. Mmm, the very first flavor I taste is the richness of the chocolate. I mean, it's a very bitter sweet chocolate. Yes, it's a dark chocolate. High percentage. And then afterwards in the back of the palate I get the spiciness from the chili, which is really nice. It's a good kick there. And what do you encourage people to dunk things in their chocolate? We do. We also serve it with a little dash of the cream on top. Okay, there you go. A little flourish. So a nice little sweet ending to your chocolatey dish. I'm going to have another taste and then we're going to talk about her wonderful truffles here.
