My name is Reverend Jeanette Wilkes and we are in the Bell Tower Cafe of St Michael's Church in Kerry. There are no facilities for people to meet in the daytime in the village so we decided that we would On a Saturday morning we open up from 10 till 12 and we have about 10, 15 regular people who Any money that's made in the cafe is going to be split between the church and between local charities so we're going to have a box set up in the cafe where people who can nominate a local charity for that month and then the money can be sent to them and we also use tradecraft products. This is a Mission Area tradecraft group so we order our tea, coffee and sugar from them and they also give a certain amount of money to charity from what they make as well. We have a group of volunteers if you have as many volunteers as you can that means that people don't have to take part every Saturday, it's once every six weeks or so. It's just taken a team of us really to get various pieces sorted so new carpets, boxing in the electricals, applying for grants for the heating, sourcing the sink because we don't have any pl We're actually getting around about 10 to 15 people coming in each Saturday and it's different people as well plus regulars. We also have other people who don't come to church who are starting to use the cafe as well and it's quite nice to be able to introduce people to each other in the cafe. I think it works because we've started off small, we've not tried to be too ambitious with it, we're hoping eventually to open maybe an afternoon or a morning in the week as well. We only had a small group of volunteers initially but as time has gone on more people have seen what's happening and felt that they could contribute either by making cakes or actually helping in the cafe so we have a couple who moved into the village last year who don't really know many people and they said could we help because we'd It brings people in, there's always I think for somebody new in particular there's always a getting over the threshold of a church that's quite difficult so I think it's getting into the church and seeing the building, feeling comfortable and then maybe joining us for other things as well.
