English guest ladies and gentlemen, it's a pleasure to be here today. It's always a privilege to have the floor and be able to express my opinions as well as facts. Today I want to talk somet Prior to coming to Huntsville Hospital I was on faculty at the University of Alabama did automotive research so we'll talk about that today but as a kid and ever since I was little my first memory of a car was riding the back of a 65 fastback Mustang with my mother who had just come from France and she had never driven a V8 before and when she came out of the neighborhood she had to turn a left and I remember my brother and I being thrown in the backseat of that car giggling as mother lit up the tires every time we came out of the neighborhood. Since that day I've been hooked on cars and I Motor ve They follow the laws of physics, Newtonian physics. Okay we'll talk about that. People are predictably injured in motor ve That's why I ask very certain pertinent questions about the tra Well you're no d So we're going to talk about statistics, crash-wort We'll talk about quandary resolution and the purchase of an automobile, safety features and then crash avoidance. Why is t I started doing my research on t I said I'm not even, I weigh about 20 pounds less than that hybrid three. All right? I'm same height as he is but I looked around and said t So I got to thinking what if cars were to be tested with different sized d Well we can't really do that but I said well let's go to the database and let'sample the database programming in different height than weights of people that crash in real-world vehicles compare them to the d So t But what it is a national probability sampling of light truck and ve So the first t So this is, I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this data but what I did was I divided it into six weight groups and four height groups and here's the reference is the hybrid three crash d Then I looked at frontal collisions, all right, what about just pure frontal impacts? Once again t And the follow-on study was well let'see are there different areas of the body that are more So that was the next study that we did and t I'm not going to go through t So the implications that we, that makes sense are if you're the driver of the passenger in a vehicle and you have a dissimilar body habit, meaning you're not shaped like the hybrid three crash d So what I would love to see is that there'six, seven, eight, nine, ten crash d You play bingo, you get crash d But you t But I think we do need to realize that the shape of our population has changed and the crash d One in five Americans will be over the age of 65 by the year 2020. All right. 85 and older is the fastest growing segment of drivers in t Older adults have the next study that we did, well, I said, Older people can break their So once again, we looked at it, we did adjusted and unjusted data. And as you can imagine, it only makes sense. Older people break their legs more often than younger people in car wrecks. Well, once again, what were the implications that I saw from t What, how do we need to t Well, perhaps our crash d All right. Making safer choices. All right. So now that I've shown you all there are cars I want, cars I covet, cars I That for me is the car buying quandary. That's the quandary. Okay. Do I, do I feed my emotion? Do I feed my passion? Do I want that 67 fastback Elinor the GT 500? Does that what I want? All right. And yes, I'm anti green. I love gas guzzlers. Then my t Do I need t Marin and I'm kind of t And here you can see the classic SUV pickup where the front tire has come up into the floorboard, w That's pretty classic for an offset frontal and a pickup truck because they're frame on body, not unitized body construction. So safety, practicality, emotion. That's where we start. And once again, maybe at the end that'll change. So when you're looking at different cars and you're looking at safety, okay, you've got to consider size and weight. It's a matter of physics. Okay. We'restraint systems. I've talked about seatbelts simply the greatest invention ever in automotive safety crash where t I was asked by Volvo to assist with the honoring the 50 year seatbelt in New York Auto Show several years ago and we put together a video we're going to talk a little bit about the different safety there's passive safety and there's active safety in automotive in cars today. Let's talk a little bit about the n That's you, the driver, the attentive driver. But I worry about a lot of people already worried about an automotive safety now is the more t Okay. And that's what we don't want to occur. You go buy a new car today. It's got Bluetooth, Yazu, it's got Yahoo, it's got wireless. You can even get wireless in your car if you're in an area that's got wireless now. It is amazing. Look at the car dash today. Bells, lights, w Okay. There is a ton of driver distraction in the ve You've been playing with the buttons trying to find somet Okay. Driver distraction. All right. What's the greatest distractor in the ve Two year old in the backseat though. I had kids, man. The distractor more than anyt So we started with the car buying quandary. A motion that red sports car that you want so bad. Perhaps it was practicality. But hopefully we've cleared the air a little bit here. You've learned a lot about automotive safety. You've learned about driver behavior. You've learned about car crashes. You've learned about options that are available in your ve But decrease your odds.
