It is located at E. 130th Street and Torrence Avenue in the Hegewisch community area of Chicago, Illinois. Chicago Assembly currently builds the Ford Taurus and the Ford Explorer, both of which share the same platform.Production started on March 3, 1924, as an alternative production site for the Model T to the River Rouge Plant. It switched to Model A production in 1928, and built M8 Greyhound and M20 Armored Utility Car armored cars during World War II. It was the site of pickup truck production for 40 years before that operation stopped in 1964. In 1985, it was selected as the site of production for the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable midsize sedans.Ford spent $400,000,000 in 2004 to modernize the plant. It switched to production of the D3 platform vehicles for 2005. Nine automotive suppliers have built factories nearby at the Ford Chicago Manufacturing Campus developed by CenterPoint Properties. Ford's Chicago plant is a center for flexible just-in-time production. It employs over 4,099 workers.

Welcome to our home, the Chicago Assembly plant. Home to 5,000 workers and the all new Ford Explorer. We've been here on the south side of Chicago since 1924. Billing everything from the Model To the F100 pickup to the Ford Thunderbird. When Henry Ford opened this place, he said it would build American vehicles for 100 years. And we haven't stopped building since then. But that doesn't mean things haven't changed. This place has been completely revamped. It took a month to clear out everything and replace it with a brand new production line. And a month is really fast for a plant this size. A record ford and Fats, it cost $1 billion to renovate this place. And now we got the latest and the greatest technology. New 3D printers and more than 600 new robots. New workspaces and a data center. These are the things that make our job a little easier. So we can be more efficient. It's helping us make smarter vehicles. A high-tech plant to make our high-tech vehicles. This plant is 95 years old, but it's just Totally redone. To help us build the fast vehicles for customers. Hopefully for a long, long time. I'm Jason Perez. I'm Kekecia Evans. I'm Robert Wachers. I'm Debbie Cassana. I'm dedicated. I'm a hard worker. I'm passionate about my work. I'm all about safety. And I love my job. This place is filled with hard workers. And I'm proud to build the Ford Explorer. The Explorer ST. The Explorer Hybrid. The Lincoln Aviator. The Police Interceptor Utility. We're going to work hard all the time to keep it that way.
