Drawing upon their experience from two sides of the collision repair industry, the husband-and-wife team of Joe and Jennifer Shoemaker, owners of Shoemaker Collision & Paint Center LLC, has shaped the business’ operations and marketing to find a quality- and customer-driven niche in a field full of direct-repair shops since opening the shop in July 2013. As a student at Wichita Area Technical College, Joe Shoemaker joined the school’s VICA chapter (now SkillsUSA,) where he placed first in the Collision Repair Technology contest and second in Automotive Refinish Technology. Those successes brought scholarships, after which he earned a degree from Pittsburg State University for business. For more than a decade, he then worked as a painter – his passion – at a variety of collision repair shops, including a high-volume independent, a dealership, and the one he said he most models his operations after, a specialist in premium cars including Ferraris, Porsches, and BMWs. Jennifer's Insurance experience aids in countering DRP shops Before coming to work full time at the business early this year, Jennifer Shoemaker worked for a State Farm agent and, later, an independent insurance broker for a total of 16 years. Keeping an insurance company from pushing a customer toward one of its DRP shops requires educating customers about their options, she said, adding that, often, customers are led to believe they have no choice.
