It’s hard to exactly pinpoint when owner, Sonny Past’s, love for cars began. As an avid car lover, during his teenage and young adult years, he would buy and sell vehicles that he had rebuilt for hobby. However, when it was time for a steady income, Sonny turned to plumbing for just that. He hadn’t forgotten about his true love though. Sonny still managed to work on cars when time allowed. On the job, while his coworkers shared stories of plumbing, all Sonny could seem to share were stories about cars. He spent six years working as a plumber before he was faced with a question from a fellow coworker, “If you love cars so much why didn’t you go into that industry instead?” So, Sonny decided it was time to do just that. Sonny Past chased his dream and worked for a collision shop until 1973. It wasn’t long after that he was opening his own auto body & collision repair business. As a Granite City native, Sonny saw it fit to open his own business in his hometown on East 21st Street. He worked diligently to establish a reputation in the community for providing quality repairs, which still stands true to this day. In 1984, Sonny Past Auto Productions, officially relocated to it’s current address at 2261 Madison Avenue. If you know of Sonny Past, chances are you know him for the pristine work his shop creates or his collection of Hotrods and Custom Cars. After regrettably selling a few of his prized possessions in the nineties, Sonny decided he would never sell one of his coveted vehicles again. On a beautiful day, a drive by his shop will usually give a car enthusiast a thrill being that he usually has one or two of his personal vehicles on display for onlookers. When faced with the question about retirement, Sonny always manages to answer with the same reply,“ What would I do with myself, this is what I love, I love Cars”
