Starting in 1984 as a driver and owner, Coyne drove five seasons in the now defunct CART series where he was Rookie of the Year at both the Michigan and Pocono 500’s. In 1990, Coyne stepped out of the cockpit and turned his talents to the tutelage of several up-and-coming drivers. He is known in the open-wheel community for his ability to recruit and coach young drivers. He was the only CART owner to serve on both the CART and USAC Boards. Coyne also was picked by his fellow owners to be the interim CEO of CART in 1994 and 1995. In 1998, Coyne designed and built Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL. This state-of-the-art drag racing facility drew the attention of Indianapolis Motor Speedway CEO Tony George. George and Coyne, along with International Speedway Corporation, would go on to expand the facility by forming a partnership and building Chicagoland Speedway. Coyne served as president of the facility through its construction and opening season and along with George, served on its management committee until its eventual buyout by ISC in 2007. Prior to making the transition to the IndyCar Series, the team competed in the Champ Car World Series. In 2007, driver Bruno Junqueira recorded back-to-back-to-back podium finishes (Zolder, Belgium, Assen, Netherlands and Surfers Paradise, Australia) on route to a seventh place finish for the year. In 2008, the teams first year in the IndyCar Series, drivers Junqueira and Mario Moraes recorded five combined top-10 finishes and both drivers led several laps during the famed Indianapolis 500. In July of 2009, the team celebrated its first win when Justin Wilson won at Watkins Glen. Wilson would go on to finish with seven top-10 finishes and ninth in the 2009 IndyCar Series point standings. In June of 2012, DCR celebrated its second win, once again with Wilson behind the wheel, this time at Texas Motor Speedway. In June of 2013, Mike Conway scored the team's third win in Race #1 Dual in Detroit and won the Pole for the second race. Dale Coyne Racing is based in Plainfield, IL, which is located about 40 miles southwest of downtown Chicago.

Last week we looked at the career of returning Dale Coindriver Ed Jones so if you haven't already check that out. Don't forget if there is a driver team or topic you'd After last week's video, Ian Rhinerson suggested a video on who are Dale Coinds so in a part two of a three week focus on Dale Coind racing it's time to ask who are Dale Coinds? Founded in 1984 by Dale Coind himself as a driver owner, the early history of the team was all about finding its feet in the Kart Championship. In 1984 he would only qualify for one race out of the 10 entered and that would be at Mid-Ohio where Dale would finish 14th but his 1984 efforts earned him a kart franchise for the 1985 season. In 1986 Coind achieved his best career result of 12th twice in the season at Cleveland and the Speedway at Montreal. This season would also see the team run the Coind DC1 which was the 1984 Lola Indy car modified to fit a Chevy stock block engine. Dale would finish a career height of 34th in the championship which he would again achieve in 1988. Due to financial constraints as a new team, Dale Coind were one of the only teams to run the stock block Chevy engine and its lack of performance showed when 1986 Rookie of the Year Dominic Dobson ran a one-off race for them in 1988 at the Phoenix round and could only finish 26th but after the 1988 season there would be some changes to the team wouldn'there Stephen? Yes after the 1988 season Dale Coind would retire from racing for the team to focus on tutoring and developing younger drivers coming into the sport that he would still drive the occasional race up until 1991. As well as young drivers Dale utilised pay drivers highlighting the need for better equipment to be more competitive so in 1989 the team ran two Italian pay drivers in the form of Guido Dacco and Folvio Balabio which their funding allowed the team to run a pair of 1988 Lolo Cosworth cars. Though Folvio would only end up running one race that year while failing to qualify for another. Guido would contest six of the 15 rounds that season securing enough points to finish 29th in the championship with the team's best result to date. In 1990 the team would secure full-time sponsorship from the Japanese Insight group which allowed them to field a new Lolo car for Rookie Dean Hall and he would secure four points and finish 25th in the standings. Dale's chief mechanic Bernie Myers was behind preparing the car for the season and his and the team's endeavours enabled them to qualify for their first Indy 500 in their seven year history. Their mechanical expertise was noted by the series by awarding team the Clint Brawner Mechanical Excellence Award for the 1990 Indy 500, a feat they would achieve again in the 1992 Indy 500. Dale Coyne's team during the period of 1990 to 2007 would continue to employ the method of utilising pay drivers and giving younger drivers their first opportunity within the sport, running one full-time seat and another car that's drive was shared between other drivers. The exception to this was in 1996 and 2007 where the team ran two full-time seats for both drivers. In fact, during this time the team would provide races for 31 rookies including 2003 car champ Paul Tracy and Indy Lights champion Eric Bachelard. The team would earn a reputation for developing drivers and enabling them to spring their careers up with other teams. The team's first podi They would have to wait till 2004 for the team's next podi His performance is an impressed Newman Haas racing and he would be signed by them from Dale Coyne after just two races in the 2005 season. Oriol would go on to finish second before he finds his new teammate Sebastian Bordes but their most impressive set of results came from Brazilian driver Bruno Junqueira in the last champ car season in 2007. With three back-to-back to back podi In 2008 Dale Coyne would move across to the newly unified IndyCar series. Bruno alongside rookie Mare Moray was unable to reach the heights of his last season in champ car but between them secured five top 10 finishes and both drivers led several laps at that year's Indy 500 but 2009 would be the real season of note for Dale Coyne. After 26 years and 558 career starts Justin Wilson would secure the team's first ever victory at Watkins Glen. Dominating the race leading 49 out of the 60 laps he would also podi 2010 saw the team maintain its youth reputation with British driver Alex Lloyd securing rookie of the year and also finishing fourth at the Indy 500. The team's best finish in the race at that day. 2011 also saw Sebastian Bordes have his first stint with the team running road and street only due to clashes with his Le Mans series commitments. It would appear that after years of grinding their way through and competing that Dale Coyne was starting to get stronger foothold in the series and attracted good level of talent as well as continuing to provide a platform for young drivers to enter the sport. 2012 and 2013 would be seasons of note for Dale Coyne. Justin Wilson returned to the team and secured the team'second victory and first on an oval at the Texas Motor Speedway and in 2013 would secure four podi Mike Conway secured the team's third victory at Detroit race one and with Justin also securing third that race would be the team's first ever double podi Rookie Carlos Giertes would secure the team's fourth victory at the Houston GP and Coyne would also be the team to give current Ed Carpenter driver Conor Daly his first shot in the series. In 2017 Sebastian Bouldais would sign full time for Dale Coyne alongside rookie and indie lights champion Ed Jones. Sebastian would take the early championship lead winning the season opener at St. Pete and coming second at Long Beach before his season started to take a downturn with mechanical failures before suffering a crash at the Indy 500 where he was on track to take pole and it would rule him out for the majority of the season. Ed Jones however would finish third in the 500 and this is the team's best ever result at Indy Cars premi Dale Coyne along with giving rookies an opportunity has also provided female drivers with a platform to compete in the series with Catherine Legue, Milka Dano, Anna Beatriz and Pippa Mann all having driven for the team. Opportunity is definitely at the forefront of this team's philosophy and still to this day its development of young drivers is an important part of the team's DNA. Ed Jones was signed by Chip Ganassi after one season Santino Frucci was 2019 Indy 500 rookie of the year and finished fourth for the team there in 2020 and Alex Pallou their 2020 rookie was signed for Chip Ganassi at the end of last season. Having never won an Indy 500 or a championship in its time is dedication to promoting young drivers is definitely something to be proud of. Dale Coyne's journey as a team has been a path of attrition making small gains year by year having to work in partnership with teams or drivers to provide funding to improve competitiveness of the overall team. Its first two decades were a real struggle in terms of results but the last 10 years have seen a more regular influx of wins and podi Entering into its 38th year as part of the series Dale Coyne lines up with Ed Jones in partnership with Vasa Sullivan and Roman Grozion in partnership with Ric Ware Racing and it is pres Jones a driver hungry to prove what he's got with a second chance given to him by Coyne and Grozion a talented fast driver from F1 whose career had stalled but could certainly reignite his career indica Dale Coyne may well benefit this year from the eagerness of both these drivers to prove what they've got. But that's it for us today guys we hope you've enjoyed this look into the interesting journey of Dale Coyne racing indica don't forget if there is a driver team or topic you'd
