Every time I travel somewhere new, I bring home a cup to add to my shelf and share its story. I recently went toronto and visited a shop called Archee Element. There I met the owners, Eunice and Nicole, who share a passion for ceramics and creative tea-based drinks. They thoughtfully curate pieces from around the world and always take time to connect with each artist before bringing their work to the store. I was drawn to one of the ash cups made by Guangyun from China, which was created using a process I hadn't known before called wood firing. The ceramics are made in a special kiln where wood burns and from the wavy patterns and rich colors, you can visualize the direction the fire was blowing. The black specks you see inside the cup also show the ashes that settled during firing. With a vol 5 ounces and a weight equivalent to six misquies, it's perfect for my morning cortados. So if you're ever in Toronto, give Archee Element a visit and stay tuned as we continue filling up the shelf.
